Adam Smith (1723-1790) udgav i 1776 bogen "An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations". Den regnes normalt som liberalismens grundbog. Smith fik afgørende betydning for den økonomiske og politiske modernitet i Europa i det følgende århundrede. Hans bog var et markant opgør med "de traditionelle samfund" som han opfattede dem.
